Music
The Music Department’s activities and achievements are amongst the most impressive of any school in Europe.
Recently the School Choir performed in St Peter's Basilica, Rome, Madrid's Almudena Cathedral, produced two performances of Fauré’s Requiem with the combined School’s choirs numbering over 150 singers, staged four performances of Les Misérables, toured to Venice and sang at St. Mark's Basilica. The Chamber Choir has toured many cities within Europe and Italy and performed in major venues in Venice, Naples, Florence, Madrid, Lucerne, Palermo and Zurich.
Each year the School holds a traditional British service of Readings and Carols at the Santa Maria del Carmine church in Brera, with about 200 singers and a full orchestra. Other events include the Primary School Chamber Music Festival, an Autumn Concert in the All Saints' Anglican Church in Brera, the May Concert in School, the Primary School Christmas and Summer concerts, monthly Wednesday Instrumental Concerts and countless instrumental teachers’ concerts that enrich the ends of terms.
Singing in choirs and learning instruments forms the backbone of the School’s musical activities. There are five choirs: the Primary School Choir (Years 3 - 6), Junior Choir (Years 7 & 8), Senior Choir (Years 9 - 13, including staff), the select Chamber Choir (Years 7 - 13 including staff) and also a Parents’ and Friends’ Choir. In the Carol Concert and the Easter Choral performance these choirs all combine. Recent performances have included CD and DVD recordings of Mozart’s Requiem, Fauré’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah and Haydn’s Wind Band Mass. Instrumental ensembles include the Primary School Orchestra, Senior School Orchestra and Jazz Band.
The School is the centre for the ABRSM for Italy and has a team of 15 instrumental teachers who provide tuition for about 200 students on a range of instruments. Home-grown success stories include students currently studying at The Juilliard School (NYC) and Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester. We are recognised across the world as a centre of excellence based on our ABRSM performance results.
