Yes, the School has arranged for a regular and punctual service to three destinations:

• City Centre
• Milano Due
• San Donato

Many of the older students take the metro (Green Line – stop Udine) or train to Lambrate FS. Some parents drive their children to school. Further details about the school bus are available here.   

As a not-for-profit school, in order to enrol students at the BSM, you need to become a member of The Sir James Henderson British School of Milan ETS (Ente Terzo Settore) - view the fees here -  and pay school tuition fees to The British School of Milan SRL which are available here.

There is a wide range of sporting, music, instrumental lessons, drama, outward bound and curricular clubs on after-school. Depending on the club, there may be a shuttle bus to return students home. A programme of activities is published for each term.

There is the option of buying a school lunch. The menu is published every week in the School’s Newsletter.  Students may also bring their own packed lunches.  From Year 12, with parental consent, students can go off-site for lunch. The cost of school lunches, currently €6.45, is not included in the fees.

Around 60% of the students are from international Italian families or have Italian as their first nationality. Many of these have come from abroad or have a parent of a different nationality.  Indeed many of our students have more than one nationality. The remaining students comprise over 40 different nationalities. Many students wish to go on to a university in the UK, and want a British style education with excellent preparation, information, advice and guidance for university applications. 

The maximum class size up to age 16 is around 20. In Years 12 and 13, the average class size is around 10.  

We offer this as an extra-curricular lesson to students, at an additional cost.  

An IGCSE is a two-year (Years 10 & 11) programme. BSM students take around nine subjects, leading to formal UK based internationally recognised qualifications at the end of Year 11. The IGCSE is an excellent preparation for students for future studies of the International Baccalaureate (IB). The IB Diploma is studied in Years 12 & 13 and facilitates entry to the best universities in the UK, the US, and Italy, as well as top universities around the world. 

Primary School comprises Foundation Stage which is the equivalent of Scuola Materna, then Years 1-6 (Scuola Primaria). Senior School is the equivalent of Scuola Secondaria di Primo e Secondo Grado.  We start school with Nursery from age 3. Our Year 1 begins age 5, whereas in Italy it starts age 6. 

Sport is part of the curriculum. We have our own Primary School gymnasium. From Year 3, the children also go off-site, by bus, to the nearby Campo Schuster and several other facilities for individual sports, such as swimming. There are many sports available, including after-school clubs offering football, rugby, volleyball, basketball, badminton, fencing, trampolining, canoeing, rowing and karate amongst others.

Most teachers are hired from the UK and have a Postgraduate Teaching Qualification (PGCE).  Some teachers have lived here for many years; others stay for 2-5 years. Many have worked in other British Schools abroad. The turnover of staff is healthy, and we are able to recruit top teachers from the UK. Our language teachers reflect the international and multilingual community they represent, and most teach in more than one language.

Approximately 10% of the student body changes every year. This is very stable for an international school.

No, all our Sixth Form students take the International Baccalaureate Diploma, which, in our opinion, is the gold standard of international education, and the best possible preparation for university and the world of work.

However, in Year 11 advanced language students, particularly in Italian, French and Spanish, do sometimes complete accelerated A-Level courses to prepare for more in-depth studies at IB.

Homework makes students independent learners and consolidates knowledge. In the Senior School, students have a homework timetable so that they do not get too much work, ensuring there is a balance between subjects. Each section of the school has its own policy in this regard.

We run a Careers Fair every year with representatives from a wide range of careers on hand to give advice to our students. At the BSM we have a specialised team who advise students and ensure they get the best advice to enter leading universities around the world. Here is a list of the university destinations.

No, we have no specific associated school in the UK but we are formally accredited by HMC, COBIS, ISI, Cambridge International Examinations and the International Baccalaureate. We have two Heads of leading independent schools in the UK on our Board of Governors.

Yes, all students from Year 7 upwards are expected to have a laptop in lessons.

Yes, though this is only used by students if they are disabled or injured.

In determining the appropriate age group the British academic year will be used - 1 September to 31 August. See table the below for clarification:

There are three key reasons why the school feels it is in the students' best interests to follow this policy:

• at the BSM, our classes tend to be ahead of the Italian system in their coverage of subjects, so to enter a year ahead would put a pupil at a big disadvantage academically
• the above year is correct for age and date of birth within the UK system – the pupil will be with students of the same age group, and this will benefit them socially
• when it comes to applying to university, they will be competing with people of the same age across the UK - and the rest of the world; if a pupil enters the year ahead, they will be younger than all of their competitors and therefore could be at a disadvantage. Moreover, many UK universities now only take students once they are 18.

Le lezioni sono dal lunedi al venerdì, alcune attività sportive o gite possono essere organizzate durante i fine settimana. Le lezioni iniziano alle 08.50 del mattino e terminano nel pomeriggio alle 15.20. I bambini che arrivano prima dell'inizio delle lezioni saranno accolti dalle 08.15 nel cortile della scuola presso l'ingresso di via Rombon. Ci sono alcune attività extra-scolastiche nel doposcuola, fino alle 16.45.

Nella scuola ci sono più di 40 nazionalità diverse. Circa il 60% degli studenti proviene da famiglie italiane-internazionali o sono di prima nazionalità italiana. Molti di loro arrivano dall'estero o hanno un genitore di nazionalità straniera. La maggior parte dei nostri studenti ha più di una nazionalità. Molti studenti desiderano frequentare una università nel Regno Unito e si rivolgono a noi per avere una formazione scolastica britannica di livello ed un supporto nell’orientamento verso la scelta dell’università.

La dimensione massima della classi fino a 16 anni è di circa 20 studenti. Negli ultimi due anni di scuola la dimensione media della classe è di circa 10.

La nostra scuola non è parificata. Ciononostante offriamo delle lezioni extra-curriculari per la preparazione agli esami di Quinta Elementare e Terza Media agli studenti interessati, a un costo aggiuntivo.

L’ IGCSE è un programma di studio due anni (Year 10 e Year 11). Gli studenti scelgono nove materie tra quelle proposte e sostengono un esame di stato riconosciuto dal governo britannico. L’IGCSE offre garantisce agli studenti un'ottima preparazione per i loro futuri studi nell’ International Baccalaureate (IB). Il Diploma IB è il percorso di studi degli ultimi due anni (Year 12 e Year 13) e offre la preparazione più adeguata per l’ingresso nelle migliori università del Regno Unito, degli Stati Uniti, dell'Italia e di tutto il mondo.

La Primary School include la Scuola Materna (che dura 2 anni) e la Scuola Primaria (che dura 6 anni). L’Senior School è l'equivalente della Scuola Media (KS3, che dura 3 anni) e del Liceo (KS4 e KS5 che durano in tutto 4 anni). I nostri bambini iniziano al compimento dei 3 anni.

Lo sport è parte del curriculum. Noi abbiamo la nostra palestra interna utilizzata dalla Primary School. Dal 3 ° anno, i bambini vanno anche fuori sede, in autobus, presso il vicino Centro Sportivo Schuster per praticare vaari sport o presso la piscina di Segrate per praticare per esempio il nuoto. La Scuola offre molti sport, alcuni come attività extra-scolastica: calcio, rugby, pallavolo, pallacanestro, badminton, scherma, trampolino, canoa, canottaggio e karate, tra gli altri.

 

La maggior parte degli insegnanti è reclutata nel Regno Unito e ha una specializzazione nell’insegnamento (Qualification PGCE). Alcuni insegnanti hanno vissuto qui per molti anni, altri si fermano per 2-4 anni. Molti hanno lavorato in altre scuole britanniche all'estero. Il turnover del personale è nella norma. Gli insegnanti francesi, spagnoli e italiani sono tutti madrelingua.

 

Circa il 10% del corpo studente cambia ogni anno. Questo è molto stabile per una scuola internazionale.

No, tutti i nostri studenti del Sixth Form (KS5) studiano per ottere il Diploma di Baccalaureato Internazionale (IB), che, a nostro avviso, è il piú alto grado di formazione internazionale, e la migliore preparazione possibile per l’università e il mondo del lavoro.

Tuttavia, gli studenti dell'anno 11 che presentano un livello avanzato, in particolare in italiano, francese e spagnolo, a volte seguono corsi accellerati di A-Levels per prepararsi a studi più approfonditi in vista del Diploma IB.

Lo studio rende gli studenti indipendenti e consolida le loro conoscenze. Nella scuola superiore, gli studenti hanno un orario di lavoro organizzato in modo tale da non essere troppo carichi e garantire che vi sia un equilibrio tra le materie. Ogni sezione della scuola ha una propria politica in questo senso.

No, siamo una scuola attiva solo di giorno.

No, non abbiamo alcuna scuola associata nel Regno Unito ma siamo formalmente riconosciuti e accreditati da HMC, COBIS, ISI e IBO. Nel nostro consiglio di amministrazione siedono come membri indipendenti due presidi di due importanti scuole britanniche.

Sì, tutti gli studenti dal 7° anno in su dovrebbero avere un laptop in lezioni.

Sì, anche se questo viene utilizzato solo dagli studenti disabili o feriti.

Nel determinare la fascia di età appropriata, si fa riferimento all'anno accademico britannico:  1 settembre - 31 agosto. Guardare la tabella riportata di seguito:

Ci sono tre ragioni principali per cui la scuola ritiene che sia nell'interesse degli studenti seguire questa politica:
• il programma svolto in classe è diverso da quello italiano ed entrare con un anno di anticipo  metterebbe l’alunno in un grande svantaggio accademico rispetto agli altri
• il ragazzo sarebbe in classe con studenti della sua stessa fascia di età, e questo andrebbe a loro beneficio dal punto di vista sociale
• al momento di fare domanda ad una università del Regno Unito o del resto del mondo, lo studente sarebbe in competizione con persone della sua stessa età. Inoltre, molte universitá britanniche ammettono solo studenti che hanno superato i 18 anni di etá.
